Insects are a huge group of animals. They are invertebrates which means that they do not have internal skeletons.

They tend to have certain characteristics in common such as:

A hard shell on the outside of the body called an exoskeleton.

Six legs.

One or two pairs of wings.

A pair of feelers called antennae.

Activity: Choose one of these insects or another insect of your choice and design and make a poster to illustrate its life-cycle. Please add descriptions of each stage, together with carefully labelled diagrams.

Alternative activity - Go outside and see if you can find any ladybird larvae or caterpillars. What plants are they living on? Can you describe the differences between the habitat and food of the ladybird larvae or caterpillar and their adult phase. How do their bodies change during metamorphosis? Produce an account of your observations or research.
