Life Skills (Information for Parents)
This term your children will be covering their Growing Up and Relationships topic.
Please note it is now compulsory for Relationships and Health Education to be taught in all primary schools.
Your children will learn:
- about personal identity; what contributes to who we are (eg ethnicity/gender/faith/hobbies)
- to recognise their individuality and personal qualities
- to identify personal strengths, skills and achievements and how these contribute to a sense of self worth
- how to manage set backs/perceived failures including how to reframe unhelpful thinking
- that for some people gender identity does not correspond with their biological sex
- there are different types of relationship (eg friendships, family, romantic, online)
- that people may be attracted to others and this can be someone of the same or opposite sex
- some of the effects of puberty on male(boys) and female (girls) bodies.
- the scientific names for the parts of the body such as breasts, testicles, penis, vagina and vulva.
- the importance of personal hygiene through puberty.
- where to get to help and support through puberty.
- (Girls)that women have periods, what happens during a period and how to manage
- (Boys) that all penises are different sizes and that the testicles should hang outside of the body.
- (Boys)what causes an erection and ejaculation and understand what a wet dream is and that it is normal.
- what new opportunities and responsibilities their new independence may bring
