Lesson 4: A solution for the future: Renewable Energy

Today you are going to learn about renewable energy sources. You are going to investigate how nature can help to produce sustainable energy and participate in some practical activities to investigate the best locations to generate your own.

Look at this PPT which tells you about renewable and non-renewable energy.

Today, you are going to investigate 3 types of renewable energy at Forest school: WIND POWER, WATER (HYDRO) POWER and SOLAR POWER. You will be split into 3 groups and rotate around each of the renewable energy sources using the following equipment:

Your teacher will show you how to use the equipment carefully and accurately.

Task a) Wind Power

Your task is to use the wind power generator to select the best place at Forest School to position a wind turbine. You should mark your chosen position on the map using the key.

Task b) Water (hydro) Power

Your task is to use the hydro power generator to select the best place at Forest School to position a hydroelectric generator. You should mark your chosen position on the map using the key.

Task c) Solar Power

Your task is to use the solar power generator to select the best place at Forest School to position a solar panel. You should mark your chosen position on the map using the key.

Compare your chosen locations with the other groups and answer the questions below:

  • Were your chosen locations for each of the renewable energy sources similar to other groups? Why did you chose those locations?
  • Which physical environmental features are needed for wind/ hydro/ solar power? Why is your chosen location the most suitable place?
  • Are there any physical environmental features to avoid when locating wind/ hydro/ solar power?
  • Did you find out anything interesting in your investigations?
