Lesson 2: Planting for a greener future

Today you will be learning about the importance of trees and plants and also be planting your own.

Why are trees and plants so important for our planet?

Trees are vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give life to the world's wildlife. They also provide us with the materials for tools and shelter.

If you have time, you may wish to read more about the importance of trees and plants HERE from the Woodland Trust.

You are now going to go to the Outdoor Learning area to plant your own sunflower  or Chinese Lantern seed. You can then bring it back to the classroom to care for it and watch it grow. Before the end of the term, you can take it home. You may want to plant it in your garden.

What is a Chinese Lantern plant?

Please note: the leaves, fruit and flowers of Chinese Lantern plants should not be eaten; this includes by pets.

You can also plant a seed in the 'hydrophonics lab' and watch it grow in your classroom.

You will do steps 1 - 4 in the Outdoor Learning Area.

You will then carry your plant pot back into your classroom and continue steps 5-7 over the next few weeks, before taking your plant home.
