Lesson 3: Litter: What can we do about it?

Today you will be learning about the problems of litter and how we can help.

Watch this Newsround clip HERE to find out more information about why litter is such a problem.

Read the following presentation detailing why pollution is such a huge problem and what we could all do to help.

Your task today is to go on a litter pick around LSF campus.

  • You will work in groups of 4 with the following equipment: one litter-picking hoop bag, 1 pair of litter picking gloves & 2 litter pickers per group.
  • You should be mindful not to touch the litter with your bare hands, use either the gloves or the litter pickers.
  • DO NOT touch any glass, needles or sharp objects: please notify your teacher who will be carrying a 'sharps bag.'
  • After you have finished, you will be sorting the litter you have collected to see where most of the litter may have came from. You can also see if it can be recycled or not and then dispose of it correctly.

Now you have finished your litter picking, sort your rubbish carefully into the correct hoops. Please ensure you are wearing gloves or using the litter pickers if you are touching the rubbish.

Have you noticed any 'trends' of the most common litter you found in terms of type or material?

Where do you think the litter has came from?

Can it be recycled?

Now you can place the litter into the correct bin and give yourself a big pat on the back for helping the environment. Now go and wash your hands!
