Lesson 1: Climate Change Orienteering
In this lesson you will learn all about Climate Change through an orienteering activity.
You will need:
- A map of the school grounds
- A Clipboard with a (double-sided) record sheet
- A pencil
- A compass (optional)
You will be working in pairs. You need to use the map to locate the 16 facts. Once you have found a fact, read the question and circle the answer on your recording sheet. The fact cards will teach you all about Climate Change and the answers are not necessarily all retrieval type answers. Therefore, you must read and understand all of the information on the fact cards and then use this information to select your answer. Don't forget to mark the coordinate for each fact as you go.
As well as learning about Climate Change, you will also learn and consolidate map skills:
- Can you orientate your map to ground?
- Can you orientate your map using a compass? (optional)
- Can you pin-point your current location on the map?
- Can you suggest directions for certain numbered fact cards?
- Can you suggest features you will past on your route?
- Can you correct your location when you make any mistakes?
- Can you take bearings from a pin-point to a given fact using your compass? (optional)
Your teacher will go through the answers with you afterwards. 2 points for each question, (1 point for the correct answer, 1 point for the correct coordinate.) Total marks = 32.
Your teacher will give you a copy of the map and record sheet shown below.
